Most people have little idea of what causes most deaths, fixating on some things and downplaying others. People are terrified of sharks. But only a tiny handful of us will die from being eaten by sharks. Most of us will die from heart disease or cancer. This graphic from Visual Capitalist shows just how different our fears and reality are. It's not terrorism you should be afraid of, but MacDonalds.
Another interesting chart is this one, which shows that what kills young people is accidents (mostly car accidents), murder, and suicide. I was told years ago by an actuary who worked for a life insurance company that there was a big bulge in the death statistics from car accidents among young men, from their teens into their mid-20s. Perhaps we should try bringing up our young men to be less macho, less aggressive, and less stupid. Toxic masculinity kills. But maybe that's too much to ask. Cultural values are sacred, don't you know. I'm not going to bring my boy up a sissy.
