The building's on fire

By Cathy Wilcox  [This is the first time I've linked a cartoonist's Mastodon account]

[This is in reference to Australia's plan to cut its own emissions but to expand emissions from the fossil fuels it exports, which will be 5 times as large]

Democracy sausage

It is a tradition in Australian elections that on the election day at the polling place, there are booths for charity organisations selling cakes and cooking sausages.   At the last election, Labor differentiated themselves sharply from the soi-disant "liberals" and lost the election they were expected to win.  So this time, they've made themselves a much smaller target.  Although Labor does have a better emissions-reduction policy than the LNP coalition, it's still in favour of new coal mines and increased coal exports.  For my non-English-speaking readers, the reference to 'pork' refers to the slang phrase 'pork barrel' which refers to electoral bribes handed out by the government to swing voters towards them.  This "Liberal-National" government has been the most corrupt ever.  The election is on Saturday.

Reminder to Americans: outside the USA, blue means right-wing, red left.

I can't breathe

Some Ozzies have been smug about the racism and riots in the USA.  But people of colour die after police brutality in Australia too.  Over the last 4 years, nearly one Aboriginal a month has died in custody in Australia.  Oddly enough, no police have been convicted.

This is Cathy Wilcox's cartoon about that.  The sanctimonious cretin in glasses is our P.M., Scott Morrison.

Action on climate change

A cartoon by Cathy Wilcox.  The man driving the steamroller is our esteemed PM, Scroto, leader of the badly misnamed Liberal Party.  They want to subsidise new coal power stations.  They have to subsidise them because they are completely uncompetitive with renewables.  They also want to take away all welfare benefits from climate protesters and to fine anyone who protests $20,000.

I bet you can't guess who makes very large "contributions" to the Liberal and National party coffers and to the IPA, the neo-con "thinktank" that supports them.

Changing the minds of denialists

A cartoon from Cathy Wilcox.  The background is that after telling us for decades that there is no such thing as global warming, the conservatives in Oz have suddenly switched to supporting nuclear.  As we all know, nuclear is 4 or 5 or 6 times as expensive as wind and solar, depending on how you account for the  cost of implicit government insurance, the cost of government debt guarantees, and the cost of decommissioning.

Coalition, correlation, causation

A cartoon from Ozzie cartoonist Cathy Wilcox.  In Australia, the Liberal Party (which is quite far right these days) is in coalition with the National Party.  Both parties deny global warming and want to subsidise new coal power stations.  In election after election here over the last year, the public has shown that it wants a decent climate policy.  The government has no idea how to satisfy these demands.  And so, the ALP (Australian Labor Party) is riding high in the polls.
