Global shipping has a big fossil fuels problem

From a toot by Jan Rosenow

Carbon emissions from international shipping exceed those of a highly industrialised country such as Germany.

And 40% of all cargo (by weight) are fossil fuels on their way to be burned or chemicals derived directly from fossil fuels.

In other words, if we stopped using petrol/diesel in cars and fossil fuels in power stations, we would also cut emissions from shipping by ~40%, even if cargo ships went on using diesel fuel.
