This is crazy: 40% of global shipping is purely used for transporting fossil fuels. Switching to renewable energy sources makes this largely obsolete.
This is significant as the shipping industry is one of the largest polluters worldwide, roughly equal to the emissions of large industrial countries like Germany.
Ships are no exception.
