Wind and solar better together

This map shows how solar resources differ across Europe.  It's sort of obvious that in the south, solar resources are higher, while in the north they're lower.  In southern Spain, solar irradiation is three times as high as in the north of Scotland.  But with wind, it's the other way round.  The winds in Scotland, over the North Sea, in Denmark and northern Germany are strong.  With a continent-wide electricity grid, this means that sunshine in southern Spain can power the grid in northern Europe, while winter winds in the north can power the Mediterranean countries.  Some countries (like Morocco, for example) are lucky enough to have plentiful wind and solar resources.
