18 months after Tesla launched the Model 3 in the USA, it's been launched in Australia. Only the standard range plus and the dual motor all wheel drive are being offered, for now. Delivery in August.
The pricing is a little confusing. It says $66,000 (that's in Oz dollars, not US) but it gives the drive-away price of A$70,370. Presumably this is because of "on-road costs", whatever they are. I've never understood why they shouldn't just be included in the price, or even what exactly they are. The BMW 3 series sells for A$67,900 plus on-road costs for the diesel version, and $70,900 for the petrol (gasoline) version. BMW sells around 23,000 cars a year in Australia, Mercedes-Benz 32,000, Audi 19,000. Since the Model 3 is comparable in price to these other luxury cars, but vastly superior, it could take half these sales, increasing EV sales from 0.1% of the total market to over 3%. The EV revolution has finally arrived in Oz.
Alas, I can't afford a Model 3. Maybe next year. Maybe, never.
