The real reason why ICEVs are finished

For decades we lived with the pollution from cars and lorries, because there was no practicable alternative to fossil fuels.  We just put up with the deaths from air pollution because we had to.  For example, a recent study in Australia calculated that more people die from air pollution from cars and lorries than die on the roads from car accidents.

But now there is an alternative.  Already EVs are cheaper to run than ICEVs, though their up-front ("sticker") price is greater.  By 2022 [Update, June 2022: hasn't happened yet.  2025 seems likely, now] or so, EV "sticker" price will be the same for ICEVs.  Then there will be no reason for us to continue using them.  All this is over and above the huge amounts of carbon dioxide fossil fuel vehicles emit, which adds to global warming.
