Domed forest on Mars

From Artur Rosa at HumanMars:

I doubt the stars would be visible during Martian daylight. Instead there would be the dusty dull red Martian sky, not this splendid view of the cosmos.  Otherwise it's a lovely image.  I like the central pillar/skyscraper which would prolly be necessary for a dome this size.  Might as well use it.

Remember, we would first have to create soil on Mars.  We take the biome and ecology for granted here on Earth.  Soil isn't just sand.  It's sand plus humus, bacteria, earthworms and other insect life, nutrients, and so on.  It's living.  You can't just scoop up Martian regolith and plant things in it, even under a dome with Earth type atmosphere.  It'll be a lot harder.  Soil will take a while to create.  In nature, the pace is slow, but mankind can speed it up.  I do it myself every time I dig compost and manure into bare clay.  In addition, the dome will have to be pressurised, heated, lit, and protected against cosmic radiation.  Building such a dome with a viable forest in it would be a formidable technological achievement, second only to getting safely to Mars in the first place.
